History and operations
The company has two major mining assets and both are located in South Africa on the Bushveld Complex. Between the two assets there is a total of over 40 million tonnes of chromite. The projects are the Stellite Project (Western Limb) and the Mecklenburg Project (Eastern Limb). The Stellite project started production in July 2008. It has a New Order Mining Right and operates a 31.9 meter opencast and underground resource. In June 2009 the benefication plant was commissioned. Soon after the project started producing around 20,000 run-of-mine tonnes a month and a new target was set: to double production by the third quarter of 2010. Mining rights were then expanded to include gold and all PGMs, and testing on chrome tailings commenced. The Mecklenburg project started after a bankable feasibility study was completed in March 2007. The project also has a New Order Mining Right and consists of a 9.6 meter underground resource. In line with the company vision of expansion into other countries Chromex Mining Ltd acquired Waylox Mining Ltd, a chrome mining firm located in Zimbabwe across an area of 683 hectares of land in the Darwandale area. Furthermore a Heads of Agreement was signed confirming the acquisition of 49% of Falvect Mining Ltd, another operation in Zimbabwe. .
